Language Learning In Japan

Language learning in different countries

Recently, great attention has been paid to language learning in different countries. Therefore, there is a growing controversy about who learns a language and where they learn them. I am going to focus on learning English in Japan, because nowadays it is more common. Some people state that the method of teaching English is flawed. Others say that no one is interested in going overseas, so they do not have to study English. In addition, it is said they only focus on tests or learning grammar. However, there are some opponents who disagree with the above perspective. They think learning English is much more important so you can know what is happening in the world and it is beneficial to learn English by reading a lot of articles from around the world. In this essay I am going to write about the current situation in Japan.

Assistant Language Teacher

The first point to consider is the fact that all Japanese people learn English when they have compulsory education. Normally they have three or four hours a week of English classes. Not only do they study Grammar, but there are speaking classes too. In the speaking classes, many native English speakers teach them in the compulsory school, they are called ALTs (Assistant Language Teachers) in Japan.

However, even with such opportunities, the Japanese still cannot speak English. Why?

Is it unnecessary to learn the other languages in Japan?

Some people say the reason why it is difficult for them to speak English is because the grammar is totally different. Normally English has a subject and verb, but Japanese people are not used to putting the subject first.

The second reason is because Japanese people believe that living in Japan is the best way so they think they do not have to live in other countries, it means that they do not need to learn other languages. On the other hand, there is no doubt that some people are seriously thinking how important it is to learn English! By reading a lot of English books and articles, our knowledge will increase more and more. People will think more about philosophy, new ideas and religion. The Japanese should forget working hard and become more creative people enjoying human life! Fortunately, the number of people who have a higher mark of English exams in terms of IELTS or TOEIC is increasing slightly. Another aspect of this issue is that some teachers do not have much knowledge to teach their students. It is easier for teachers who do not have enough abilities to teach to force students to take exams in the classrooms than to have a lesson. In our country, the problem of less competent teachers has caused serious damage. I strongly believe that the government should solve this.

I strongly recommend learning English

In the final analysis, I would like to emphasise that despite the fact that there are drawbacks, from various aspects, learning English creates talent which can open people up to a wide variety of ideas. Intercultural exchanges will eventually lead to your own growth.
