The Price of Fashion!
Are fashion items too expensive or is the price acceptable because fashion plays an important role in everyone’s life?
On the one hand, there are several arguments which prove that fashion items are priced disproportionately high. Looking at the big brands, like‘ Prada‘ , ‘D&G‘ and ‘LV‘, for example, gives a perfect example. All these brands sell their clothes, shoes, bags, etc. for prices which are almost unaffordable for someone in the ‘middle class‘ of society. Furthermore, it seems to be just the name of the brand which makes the value of the item rise up to hundreds of euros/pounds.
Another argument which supports this side of the discussion is, that nowadays western societies are very materialistic. This means, the majority of people judge others first of all by their appearance and therefore often by their clothes and accessories. But is this really the right way to judge someone? If the prices of fashion items weren’t so high and everyone was able to afford everything, would this maybe change the attitude towards fashion and would ‘inner beauty‘ play a bigger role in the first place? All those questions could lead to a result which would contribute to a better relationship amongst people in general.
On the other hand, there are also arguments against this theory. People like to express themselves in fashion, which means their clothes often reflect a part of their personality. Therefore, it is reasonable to spend a bit more money on fashion if you feel better and more yourself afterwards.
However, fashion is not just about showing off a little bit of your character. Nowadays, some people also gain confidence, fame and earn money through it. Especially with the growing social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram. These open a new labour market for society as it provides new jobs, which in the end ,contribute to the wealth of the whole society. Therefore, spending a lot of money on fashion items is reasonable as it serves a purpose higher than that.
All in all, I would definitely agree that fashion plays an important role in our society. The highly priced fashion items are, in my opinion, not a bad thing either as you may want to allow yourself something special once in a while. However, I think it is also important to see that there are much more important things than fashion, happening in the world.
