Natural Disasters in Japan

My country is famous for being a safe place. Fortunately, I’ve never been affected by anything. Conversely, Japan is also famous for its natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. I’ve suffered the effects of natural disasters many times, especially earthquakes. In 2011, Japan was affected by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, triggered an enormous tsunami.

Over ten thousand people died and more than five thousand people were injured by the disaster. Unfortunately, Fukushima prefecture had some nuclear power plants. Many people from all over the world started paying attention to Fukushima for a while because an accident at the nuclear power plant could have had repercussions around world. Over a hundred thousand people living near the nuclear power plant had to flee their homes.

At that time, I was a university student and I lived in Tokyo. When I was working in a part-time job in an office, suddenly our office was shaken like a wave. It was spooky, unlike anything I’d never experienced before. My colleagues and I took cover underneath a desk. The floor shook for 3ish minutes and after that there was plenty of aftershocks.

We were planning to go back to our homes to be on the safe side but most transport wasn’t operating because of the enormous earthquake.I ended up staying the night in my office. Most people who live in Tokyo were in the same situation as me. After that the news about the nuclear power plant was spread by Twitter, Facebook and so on. The news was muddled between false rumours and truth. Many people were confused for a while by the news.

This unforgettable experience had such a strong effect on us, so we cannot forget the disaster. I believe nuclear power will disappear in the near future and new energy will be discovered in the meantime instead of nuclear power.
