The Importance of Gadgets in My Life

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to give up technology? I am an adolescent who was born in 2001, by the way, some people call my generation ‘ Generation Z’ or ‘Post- Millennials’. Basically, we have used the Internet since a young age and we all are comfortable with using social media. I guess for me giving up devices would be quite difficult even just for a week but let’s imagine what it would look like.

The first thing I usually do every morning is ignore my alarm clock just like most teenagers do. We set at least three alarm clocks to make sure we have time to sleep a bit more and then wake up -ha ha! If I didn’t have a phone, I would probably oversleep. That wouldn’t be a nice beginning to the day, that’s for sure! Most important, I wouldn’t know what time it was as we don’t have any clocks at home, oh dear!

Inevitably, I would feel tense at college as everyone would be sharing new information that we got on the white board in our group chat, so I would have to make sure that I wrote down all the important information in the class otherwise I wouldn’t have other chance. However, the good thing is I would probably pay more attention to my classmates at break time.

As I am living in a big city and abroad actually my phone is very, very important for me. For example, if I want to go to a new place, I just have a look at google maps and choose the most convenient way to get there. Also, my phone is only way I keep in touch with my parents and friends in Latvia. If I didn’t have my phone, I would feel scared that I would get lost and, I would also feel cut off from the world because I wouldn’t be able to contact people who have been in my life since I was born and my old friends.

Living without gadgets for one week would, undoubtedly, be very challenging now that I have to do my writing homework on a computer and I have a CD-ROM for studying. Of course, studying without devices is better as you can be more focused on your task but, in my case, I do need them for translating, pronunciation, synonyms etc.

At the end of the day I usually relax and spend my free time by myself. But I am afraid, that if I didn’t have any devices, I wouldn’t be able to watch films or TV shows, or YouTube videos, I couldn’t listen to music or do structured exercise as I have an app with a special program for myself. And as I said before, I wouldn’t be able to talk with my family or old friends. I think, I would read a book or do some drawing, but I would miss music and the Internet.

All in all, I won’t say that I am very attached to technology or that I can’t live without it for a week or more, but it plays quite an important part in my life, it makes my life easier and gives a lot of features to me. In fact, I had my first mobile phone when I was eight years old. I am just so used to it!? In conclusion, I want to say that imagining one week without gadgets made me understand that people are very addicted to gadgets and technology. In my opinion, that isn’t a very bad thing if you know the limits for reasonable use and remember the reason why these devices were made.
